Sequestration of carbon dioxide

CO2-to-carbonate sequestration using membrane capture plus catalytic carbonic-acid formation enables solid, storable CO2 removal.

What it is

It captures CO2 from a gas using a gas-diffusion membrane, then converts the CO2 in a catalyst-containing fluid to carbonic acid and finally precipitates carbonate salts by adding mineral ions. The process produces a solid carbonate precipitate suitable for long-term storage, avoiding continuous solvent handling and enabling stable sequestration. Before this patent expired on 2023-05-02, building comparable membrane-catalyst-carbonate precipitation systems likely required licensing from the assignee.

What you could build

Launch modular post-combustion CO2 capture units that convert flue-gas CO2 into merchantable carbonate solids for onsite disposal.
