YC argues that as new coding tools make it easier to build and ship products quickly, great design will matter even more over the next decade. Many designers worry that AI will replace their jobs. YC's view is that the bigger opportunity is for designers to use AI themselves to launch products and companies. In its words, "The design job of the future will be 'founder'."
Designers already bring skills every founding team needs: empathy for users, a focus on solving problems, a high bar for quality, and taste. YC points to Airbnb and Stripe, saying neither would have earned users' trust without first-class design.
The ask: more designers starting companies, and founding teams with strong design and taste built in from the earliest days.
