About This Fellowship

The MacArthur Fellowship, colloquially known as the "Genius Grant," is arguably the most famous and prestigious individual prize in the United States. Each year, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation selects 20-25 individuals who have demonstrated exceptional creativity, a track record of significant accomplishment, and the potential for even more impactful work in the future. Recipients receive $800,000 in unrestricted funding paid out in quarterly installments over five years.

What makes the MacArthur Fellowship extraordinary is its structure — or rather, its deliberate lack of structure. There is no application process. Candidates cannot nominate themselves or be nominated by others through any formal channel. Instead, the Foundation relies on a confidential network of hundreds of anonymous nominators across every field of human endeavor. Once nominated, candidates are evaluated through an equally confidential process by a selection committee whose members are never publicly identified.

The award comes with no strings attached whatsoever. Recipients are not required to propose a project, file progress reports, or use the funds in any particular way. The Foundation's philosophy is that creative people do their best work when freed from the constraints of conventional grant-making. Past fellows include Ta-Nehisi Coates, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Marian Wright Edelman, Yo-Yo Ma, and hundreds of other luminaries across the sciences, arts, humanities, and social sector.

What You Get

The MacArthur Fellowship is designed to provide maximum freedom and flexibility, trusting recipients to direct the funds where they see fit.

  • $800,000 paid in quarterly installments of $40,000 over five years
  • Completely unrestricted — no project proposal, reporting requirements, or spending guidelines
  • No institutional affiliation required; the award goes directly to the individual
  • The fellowship is not a reward for past work alone, but an investment in future creativity
  • Fellows retain complete intellectual property rights over any work produced
  • The award often catalyzes additional recognition, speaking opportunities, and funding
  • MacArthur Fellows join an alumni community of over 1,100 past recipients

Selection Process

The MacArthur Fellowship selection process is uniquely secretive and operates entirely without applications. It is one of the few major awards where there is genuinely no way to apply or lobby for consideration.

  • An anonymous network of hundreds of nominators — active professionals across every field — identifies potential candidates
  • Nominators are invited by the Foundation and serve confidentially; even nominees do not know they are under consideration
  • Nominations are reviewed by a rotating Selection Committee of approximately 12 members, whose identities are never revealed publicly
  • The Selection Committee evaluates three criteria: exceptional creativity, a track record of accomplishment, and potential for future contributions
  • The Foundation's Board of Directors makes final approval of the Selection Committee's recommendations
  • Recipients are typically informed by a surprise phone call from the Foundation's president, often just days before the public announcement
  • Approximately 20-25 fellows are named each year, announced in the fall

Fields and Disciplines

The MacArthur Fellowship spans every domain of human creativity and intellectual achievement. There is no field that is excluded from consideration, and the diversity of recipients each year is a hallmark of the program.

  • Past fellows include writers, scientists, musicians, filmmakers, activists, entrepreneurs, mathematicians, and visual artists
  • Recent cohorts have recognized work in artificial intelligence, criminal justice reform, community health, choreography, documentary filmmaking, and theoretical physics
  • The Foundation explicitly seeks to recognize people whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries
  • There are no quotas by field — in some years, the sciences are heavily represented; in others, the arts dominate
  • The fellowship has been awarded to people ranging in age from 18 to 82, though most recipients are in their 30s to 50s
