Full Description
YC wants a new AI app store and operating-system layer that sits on a user's computer or phone. It lists five jobs for it: let users decide what each app can see, such as their calendar, files or browsing; keep one shared memory of preferences, past actions and context in this layer instead of scattered across apps; review and vet AI apps so people can find and install them safely; give developers simple APIs for things like computer use, local LLaMA versioning and app-level access control; and handle payments.
Each app would see only the sliver of data the user allows. YC's goal is AI that is both powerful and private.
Why now: YC grants that big tech companies might build this, but argues there is a window right now for a startup.
The ask: build this layer. YC expects it to become a new marketplace that helps app makers with both distribution and monetization.
