Full Description
YC says it was the first investor in OpenAI, which began life as YC Research, YC's in-house research lab. It credits OpenAI with pioneering the independent AI research lab, but argues that many problems in AI are still unsolved and there is plenty of room for new labs.
YC also pushes back on the idea that its founders must ship a product within three months. It says it is excited to back deep, open-ended research that may take years to commercialize, as OpenAI's did, and that top researchers following their own interests often end up somewhere interesting.
The ask: new AI research labs working on AI's unsolved problems, even if a commercial product is years away.
