Full Description

Consumers spend $20B a year on home security, and YC notes the biggest players are legacy companies whose features haven't changed in decades.

Commercial security looks different. Companies like Verkada and Lumana use AI so that doors unlock with facial recognition, cameras spot suspicious behavior and notify building managers, and virtual AI guards speak over loudspeakers to scare off criminals before a crime happens.

Why it's big: Ring was acquired for $1 billion for making video doorbells and magnetic door sensors. YC asks how big the opportunity is for a company that uses AI to make people actually feel safe at home.

The ask: AI-powered residential security.

Market opportunity

I sized this as a consumer-funnel residential security subscription business, using US security-alarm-services spend as the upper-bound TAM anchor and a monitored-home adoption pool as the serviceable segment. The base case assumes a $55/month blended ARPU and ~2.5% penetration of the addressable security-adopter homes by year 5, which yields a plausible early-stage SOM in the low hundreds of millions.

Base Annual Hybrid view. Total addressable market: $35.9 billion. Serviceable addressable market: $12 billion. Serviceable obtainable market: $60 million.
TAM$35.9B

US security alarm services spend (upper-bound home security proxy)

SAM$12B

US residential monitored + smart security households

SOM$60M

Year-1 revenue from AI-upgraded mainstream residential installs
