Full Description

YC argues that open source companies move faster than closed source ones. For developer tools, open source is a strong way to win adoption, and it also helps startups mature and sell to enterprises sooner. In YC's view, these companies succeed when they become the standard choice for software engineers.

Very technical founders have an edge here, YC says, because selling depends more on the project's technical merits than on sales tactics. They talk naturally with users who are engineers like them, and they get fast feedback from the open source community.

YC says it has funded more than 150 open source companies, including GitLab (W15), Docker (S10), Apollo (S11) and Supabase (S20).

The ask: more commercial open source companies.
