Elevator Pitch

US buyers of rolled aluminum or steel tube often wait 8 to 30 weeks, because mills run on decades-old systems. YC wants modern, software-defined American mills.

Full Description

Lead times of 8 to 30 weeks are normal for rolled aluminum or steel tube in the US, most buyers can't buy directly from mills, and mills still run on thin margins despite high prices. YC blames systems designed decades ago, not weak demand or unskilled workers.

The problems: planning, scheduling, quoting and execution are fragmented; mills optimize for tonnage and utilization rather than speed, flexibility or margin; automation lags as the workforce shrinks, with key know-how held by a few experienced operators; and energy-hungry mills rely on legacy power contracts and inflexible grids.

Why now: AI-driven planning, real-time MES (manufacturing execution systems) and modern automation can cut lead times and raise margins together, while on-site generation, smarter power management and even next-generation nuclear could lower energy costs.

The ask: software-defined American mills, especially in aluminum rolling and steel tube.
