About This Fellowship

The AI2050 program, backed by Schmidt Sciences (the philanthropic initiative of Eric and Wendy Schmidt), funds researchers tackling the most consequential open questions in artificial intelligence. The program is built on the premise that AI will be one of the most transformative technologies of the century, and that answering fundamental questions about its trajectory, safety, and societal impact requires bold, interdisciplinary thinking.

AI2050 offers two fellowship tracks. The Senior Fellowship is aimed at established researchers who have demonstrated exceptional leadership in AI-related fields, while the Early Career Fellowship targets promising scholars earlier in their academic journey. Both tracks provide generous, flexible funding designed to free researchers from the constraints of short grant cycles and narrow disciplinary silos.

The program specifically seeks out work that bridges disciplines — combining computer science with philosophy, neuroscience, economics, law, or other fields — to address questions about AI alignment, robustness, fairness, and long-term impact. Past fellows have worked on topics ranging from mathematical foundations of deep learning to the socioeconomic consequences of automation.

What You Get

AI2050 fellowships provide substantial, flexible funding that allows researchers to pursue ambitious, long-term projects without the pressure of annual renewal cycles.

  • Multi-year research funding (typically 2–5 years) with generous budgets covering salary, students, equipment, and travel
  • Access to the AI2050 community of fellows — a curated network of leading AI researchers across disciplines
  • Invitations to exclusive annual convenings and workshops hosted by Schmidt Sciences
  • Visibility and credibility boost through association with a highly selective, prestigious program
  • No restrictive IP or publication requirements — fellows retain full academic freedom

Fellowship Tracks

The program offers two distinct tracks designed for researchers at different career stages, each with its own selection criteria and funding levels.

  • Senior Fellowship: For established researchers (typically tenured or equivalent) with a strong track record and a bold new research agenda in AI
  • Early Career Fellowship: For researchers within roughly 10 years of their PhD who are doing exceptional, original work at the intersection of AI and another discipline
  • Both tracks welcome applicants from any country and any academic discipline, provided the work is relevant to the future of AI
  • Nominations and direct applications are both accepted depending on the cycle

Selection Process

AI2050 uses a rigorous, multi-stage selection process guided by a distinguished advisory board of scientists, technologists, and thinkers.

  • Applications are reviewed by a panel of experts spanning AI, philosophy, social science, and policy
  • The program prioritizes research that is hard to fund through traditional channels — interdisciplinary, high-risk, and potentially high-impact
  • Fellows are selected based on the originality and significance of their proposed research, their track record, and their potential to influence the field
  • Final decisions are made by the AI2050 leadership team in consultation with the advisory board
